Kindergarten graduation

This is Bee with his teacher, Ms. Campbell on the last day. Ms. Brenda is in the back.
This is Bee's best friend this year, Isaiah. See that rainbow chart in the background, that was how they did consequences for the kids. They started and green and what color they earned at the end of the day, that was what color they got for the day. I did not agree with this because it wasn't an average for the day, it was what color they were on at 3pm. Bee could have been awesome the whole day but the last 5 minutes told his teacher no, he gets a purple day. And then their self-worth is rolled up into these colors. Bee said he was a bad kid because got a purple or blue day. That's when we stopped caring about the chart. When Chris and I were in school, we didn't get notes home every day about how we did in class. If we got a note home, it was because we called Cosme a turkeybutt!

There was over 100 kids to hand out diaplomas to. This was Dragon, Globug and I sitting on the floor.

I couldnt agree more with you about these charts - I used them in my own classroom but started to feel the same way - teachers get caught up, forget about the positive behavior to have the kids move back up and they end up feeling badly! I have the luxury of being a small group teacher that I can focus on each individual block of time and have the kids mark their color behavior for each part of the day -- helps myself and the parents see if there are any patterns, classes, etc when the behavior occurs -- i'm glad your little one had such a nice day! Enjoy the summer!

Congratulations to Bee! He's come a long way! And his progress is so much more than his citizenship grade.

I had the same issue with one of my kids in 4th grade - only it was a citizenship grade for 6 weeks - and they could only LOSE points. Needless to say it was a bad year. The next year the teacher used the same program, but the children could earn back points for helping another student, getting an A on a test, doing a special project.... It was a much better year and encouraged much better behavior.
